LILY NEILL ARRANGEMENT, DUET AND ACCOMPANIMENT TECHNIQUES
Starting with “Arrangement Techniques”, we will cover an array of technique exercises and “brain teasers”. These can be used not only to strengthen tone and articulation, but can also be applied as arrangement tools to help develop a free flowing style all your own. Using a simple piece of music, we’ll uncover various ways of utilizing these techniques to built an arrangement. We will continue with an Introduction to 19thCentury Nordic Dance Music exploring the captivating world of Nordic Dance tunes, which flourished in the 1700s and were notated and collected in the 19thcentury. We’ll learn about the minuet (a French export!) and polka (a Polish export!) and uncover ways to interpret and enliven their storied histories on the harp! We will conclude with Duet and Accompaniment. The mini-orchestra that is the harp presents players with a myriad of possibilities of sound and texture. Playing solo, in a group, with other harps - the list goes on! - are just a few of the harp’s roles. Using a simple tune as a foundation, this workshop explores the ways in which harp players take on these different roles - as accompanists, duo partners, and in ensemble and group scenarios. The workshops will be taught both aurally and using sheet music. Players with at least 2 years experience on the harp will probably gain maximum benefit from these workshops. Intermediate Level.

NIKOLAZ CADORET BRETON MUSIC: FROM TRADITION TO IMPROVISATION
Even if Brittany is one of the Celtic countries, its music is very distinct from the one of Scotland or Ireland. Less virtuoso, it hides treasuries of subtleness and variations, being, today more than ever, deeply linked to dance and social life. The lever harp appeared quite recently in Breton music (late 50’s), and thus offers a huge freedom in terms of arrangement and transversality. Nikolaz Cadoret will thus give a course based on simple dance tunes, laments or songs, learned by ear. By exploring the tools for “spontaneous” arrangements (drones, scales, variations…) he invites the player to discover a stunning musical world. Level: From Post-Beginners to Intermediate
