FRANCES MASON & JENNY BROOME (Harp-Violin)

14:30-15:30 CONCERT
Venue: ST. MARY’S CHURCH, High Street, Ryde Isle of Wight PO33 2RE
Biography
FRANCES MASON AND JENNY BROOME have been working on a programme of music for violin and harp played by Marianne and Clara Eissler who were Moravian sisters working in London from the 1880’s to the 1920’s. They played for Queen Victoria several times, including at Osborne House in 1898, and they also played at Ryde in 1893. It was for them that Saint-Saens wrote his Fantasie in 1907 which is perhaps the best piece for violin and harp.

SILEAS is the harp duo of Mary Macmaster and Patsy Seddon using the name of a late 17th century female Gaelic bard. Their style combines the contrasting timbres of gut and wire-strung harps with the electro harp to play Scottish harp music and Gaelic and Scots song to an ever widening contemporary audience.
Patsy was taught by Alison Kinnaird in her teens while Mary looked for a harp in the Exchange and Mart - ordered one and found it was wire-strung; very unusual in Scots music. Such harps were part of the original Gaelic clarsach tradition.
They met in 1977 and went on to to work together in the all-women band, Sprangeen, before taking Sileas worldwide. They are both inspirational teachers - Patsy was the first principle Scottish harp tutor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland's Scottish music degree course - and were founder members of The Poozies, Clan Alba and Caledon.
Collaborations form a large part of their work. Patsy has worked with Dougie MacLean, Kathy Stewart and curated a tribute to her late husband, Davy Steele called 'Steele the Show' while Mary's collaborations include Shine (with Alyth McCormack and Corrina Hewat), Kathryn Tickell's Ensemble Mystical, percussionist Donald Hay and Sting.
As if that wasn't plenty to keep them busy, they are also involved in running the Edinburgh International Harp Festival.
