Harpist: Fran Barsby
Fran Barsby is a British harpist known for her passion and innovation. Fran made her professional debut in 2008 at St John’s Smith Square, London, and has since performed in venues across Europe. She graduated in 2015 from Birmingham Conservatoire and is enjoying a flourishing career as a solo harpist and with groups such as the international harp ensemble, Aurumite (flute and harp duet), and various orchestras. As Pilgrim Harps’ Online Marketing Coordinator and Resident Harpist, Fran performs and conducts master classes. The Harp Studio is the home of PoppyHarp, a lever harp showroom for Pilgrim Harps and PoppyHarp publishing, through which Fran helps young professional musicians and composers publish their work. She particularly enjoys organising ‘Come and Try the Harp’ events such as she will be doing for Harp on Wight. Her mission is to inspire harpists everywhere, and create more resources for them. MERLYNNA JOHNSON Merlynna will introduce you to the life and music of Turlough O’Carolan, the best known of the Irish harpers who lived in the 17th Century. Blinded by smallpox, at the age of 21 he set out with a horse, a guide, and his harp to make his way as an itinerant harper. About 200 of his tunes are extant. 16:00-16:45 ‘THE HARP AND THE BALLAD’
PUCKASTER Theresa Ellis will be demonstrating the use of the harp in accompanying songs that tell a story. She will be accompanied by guitarist Tom Ferguson from her duo Puckaster. This session will showcase the harp’s role in ornamenting both traditional ballads and songs that deal with more contemporary themes.
