In the Baroque era, musicians were expected not only to interpret written music but also to Create music spontaneously. Improvisation over repeating bass patterns, known as Grounds - were one of the central ways performers expressed creativity.
In this workshop, harpists will explore how to improvise over historical bass patterns such as the Chaconne, Passacaglia, Folia and Romanesca, Through practical exercises and musical examples from the 17th and early 18th centuries, participants will learn how composers and performers build entire pieces from simple repeating harmonic structures.
Suitable for harpists interested in Historical performance, improvisation, and creative musicianship, the session encourages exploration, listening and playful musical dialogue.
LEVEL: All abilities welcome
